About Claims

There are a few important things to remember when filing a claim. We understand how trying accidents can be even if it is simply a fender-bender, but this is what you purchased insurance for. First of all take a deep breath and relax, you will get through it, and the good thing is that you do have coverage*. (*as long as you kept your insurance payments current). Gather your wits about you and find a pen. Be cool, there is data that you will need and/or want to ensure things get taken care of quickly and/or minimize how this accident can effect your insurance rates, as follows:
  1. Names, addresses and phone numbers of all people involved in the accident (your car and theirs).
  2. Names, addresses and phone numbers of any witnesses to the accident.
  3. License plate, year, make and model of all vehicles involved in the accident.
  4. Exact insurance information of all drivers involved in the accident. Include name of insurance company, policy number, effective date of policy and renewal or termination date.
  5. Driver's license number for each driver involved in the accident.
  6. Exact location of the accident. Include cross streets that are close.
  7. Be ready to provide all this information yourself.
  8. Note any and all damage to vehicles and or persons.
  9. Get a copy of the police report.
  10. Try to be a calming influence for others. Admit no guilt. This is for insurance companies and/or attorneys to sort out later.
  11. If it is clearly the other party's fault or they admit to responsibility in causing the accident, report the claim to the other party's insurance company immediately. As well, try to get that documented by the police officer on the police report.
  12. Understand that in many states if the accident is not your fault, and you can prove it, your insurance rates will not go up.
